Community Social Bike Ride to Raise Stroke Awareness
Cross-country cyclist to lead ride and speak ahead of El Tour
WHO: Cross-country recumbent cyclist and Phoenix resident Dan Zimmerman will lead a social ride ahead of El Tour. Zimmerman suffers from hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, a disease in which the lungs fail to filter clots. At the age of 41, the disease caused a stroke that damaged the left side of Zimmerman’s brain, paralyzing his right arm and leg. After intensive rehabilitation, then continued outpatient therapy at a HealthSouth rehabilitation hospital, Dan found freedom when he bought his first trike and founded Spokes Fighting Strokes.
WHAT: Social bike ride ahead of El Tour lead by founder and inspirational speaker of Spokes Fighting Strokes. Dinner and drinks provided following the ride by Fired Pie. Zimmerman will speak at 6 p.m. Bike safety checks will be provided by Performance Bicycle at no-cost.

WHY: Community members will be inspired by Zimmerman’s strength and hope, and have the opportunity to ask HealthSouth hospital therapists questions about stroke and their local rehabilitation options. Spokes Fighting Strokes is a non-profit helping raise awareness and funds for the National Stroke association and the Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Foundation.
